You are purchasing a piece of stunning Spalted Beech - this size in particular is perfect for making a small, shallow bowl or platter BUT due to the spalting I would not recommend it for food use.
 
The grain of the Spalted Beech is highly intriguing, with many subtle colours running through it. The density of Spalted Beech can vary within the piece, so sharp tools are required to cut it cleanly.
 
Spalted Beech occurs when fungal spores attack the timber of fallen beech trees, creating various results ranging from loss of pigmentation (which can sometimes become white rot); marbled effects within the grain or striking black lines - however these are not always present!
 
Sometimes it can be awkward to work if the spalting has gone too far and the wood has become soft or 'punky', but if it has been processed before the spalting has reached this stage you can end up with some stunning results.
 
The timber has been thoroughly dried prior to cutting to reduce shrinkage post machining - there may be a slight amount of tolerance but not much.
 
The timber your will receive will be very similar but not exactly the same piece as shown in the photograph (every single piece of timber is unique and would take far too much time to photograph individually for resale).
