This lapping fluid has been developed to work in perfect conjunction with diamond whetstones. The fluidity of the lapping fluid means it is not too thick to prevent the diamonds from cutting the tool efficiently (which oils such as WD40 etc are); but it also helps prevent the rusting of your whetstone by up to 95%.
Nickel is porous (which is what the majority of steel bases for the stones are plated with), therefore using water can and will inevitably rust the steel core of your stone.
Please note that your stone is only guaranteed for 5 years as long as it is used with lapping fluid.

James Barry developed his diamond whetstones to be of the highest quality. They are monocrystalline - which are far superior to their cheaper, polycrstalline counterparts; and they are electroplated to their nickel carbon steel base 'card' (which is produced to be as flat as possible) instead of being impregnated/glued on.
Both of these considerations give his diamond products an enormous longevity advangate over cheaper alternatives. If you look after your stone it should last you a lifetime.
